Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The great pacific garbage patch, which was discovered in 1997, was created by natural wind and sea currents  and the gathering of pollutants. The pollution, created by the dumping of garbage into the ocean, is concentrated and is kept together by the northern pacific gyre. A gyre is a large system of rotating currents and is caused by the Coriolis effect.

Efforts to clean up the garbage patch are said to be futile. There is no simple solution to this problem, but with hopes of recycling becoming more popular, there is hope to reduce the drastic growth of the problem. Click Here for more information.

Comment! Do you think the U.S. should put any effort into cleaning the Pacific Ocean? Should other countries be held accountable as well? Why or why not?
