The Internet Goes Dark

Courtesy of Google.com
Today [Wednesday] – many websites including Wikipedia – Reddit and Google made changes to their sites to protest two pieces of legislation – the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect I-P Act. These legislations would give the government power to enforce copyright infringement and blocking websites that link to them. The entertainment studios are saying they support these legislations because they want to protect their copyrighted material.

However -- KPCC’S Madeleine Brand spoke with former studio executive Marty Kaplan. He says people against SOPA and PIPA want to find a fair middle ground with the studios.

“I think most people are looking for a way to get content that’s fairly priced, that’s legal, and that doesn’t require being the victims of the studios business model which means they have to control every aspect about the timing location and pricing of their releases.”

The website Reddit says “there’s nothing wrong with protecting copyrighted material but Protect IP and SOPA will cause too much collateral damage – have a high potential for abuse and won’t even be that effective at stopping the crimes they target.”
