Stem Cell Research Approved By Federal Judge

U.S. District Chief Judge Royce Lamberth ruled on Wednesday stem cell research can continue to receive federal funding. The Judge ruled that the research didn't violate any federal laws. This is good news for doctors, patients and President Obama.

The case against the research was brought on by two scientists, Theresa Deisher and Dr. James Sherley. They argued the experiments violated the Dickey-Wicker Amendment. The amendment says "research in which a human embryo or embryos are destroyed, discarded or knowingly subjected to risk or injury or death greater than that allowed for research on fetuses in utero."

Obama was pushing for the law to pass to further fund Embryonic Stem Cell research to find treatments to diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Those against the judge's ruling say the act is immoral and destroys the potential of human life. Senor Council Steven H. Aden of the Alliance Defense Fund said, "Americans should not be forced to pay for experiments that destroy human life, have produced no real-world treatments, and violate federal law." The ADF is an organization that advocates for religious freedom.

Dr. Sherley said she plans to file an appeal with support from the ADF.
