LAPD Officer Wounded, Suspect Found Dead

According to the LA Times, an LAPD officer suffered two gunshot wounds while reporting to a domestic dispute Sunday, April 4. The officer was shot in the jaw and chest by Sergio O. Salazar, a former convict, and is in stable but critical condition.

This all started Sunday night, at 10:30, when the fire department was tending to Salazar's wife's wounds.

When officers asked the suspect out of the house, he refused and opened fire around 2:45 a.m. Officers returned fire not after 22-year veteran, Steve Jenkins was critically hit.

After the exchanged gunfire, Salazar barricaded himself inside his home. He cut off all communication after texting his family. LAPD negotiators tried contacting the ex-convict through his cell and home phone, however, Salazar never answered.

The suspect was locked inside his home for 12 hours and opened fire at officers during a 45-60 minute time period around 10:30 Monday morning. The SWAT team eventually broke down a wall from the house using a forklift and device called the "bat Cat".

Once a robot with an extendable arm and camera entered the home, police found Salazar dead with a rifle by his side Monday morning.

Steve Jenkins was taken to Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills where he underwent surgery. The officer's wife, who is a LAPD Sergeant, has allowed doctors to release information to the press.
