Local Man to Deliver Cookies to Christmas Day Workers

KFBK - Not everyone will get the day off tomorrow for Christmas, but there's a local group of volunteers who try to make it a little better for those who have to work.

For two years in a row, going on three, John Marcotte and volunteers go out and deliver homemade cookies to those who have to work on Christmas Day. He calls it the Cookie Project. He got the idea when he was driving around and saw a fast-food restaurant with a sign posted -- saying they'd be open all day on Christmas.

"And I turned to wife and I said, 'That is the saddest thing I have ever heard in my life,' I just thought about all the people who were working there," he said.

Marcotte says something as simple as giving away cookies, lets workers know they're not forgotten. "We're going to find these people that may be having one of the worst Christmases ever, and we're going to make their day a little bit better," Marcotte said.

But it's not just John and his family who have started making this a tradition in the past couple years. "We have 1,700 cookies in our house. And then there are quite a few people that are doing small batches in their homes to deliver on their own. So, I would imagine that we're somewhere approaching 3,000 cookies in Sacramento," he said.

John says this isn't just to help those working -- but teaching his two little girls a valuable lesson as well. "For them, Christmas day has become about giving to other people. And that is such a special reward in and of itself," he said.

John says he hopes this act of kindness will spread the real meaning of Christmas.
