On Tuesday night, April 26, Lt. Wade Sharp saved his daughter's life by using his own body to protect her during a storm.
The father and daughter were camping in Mississippi when a tornado tore through their campsite. Police say a tree fell down and was going to fall on the young girl, but her dad jumped on top of her and took the full force of the blow.
During his 19 years in the department, Sharp was always well known for his bravery. He received the Chief Citation seven times, the Top Cop Award and the Medal of Valor. He received the Medal of Valor in 2006 for risking his own life by running into a burning house, without any protection, and pulling a man out a window.
Chief Richard Palmisano said, "Everyone always wanted to work with him. He was a joy to be around." He added, "He was an excellent, fantastic officer, well-liked. I never heard anything against him."
He leaves behind a wife, two daughters, a son and a step-brother also stationed at Covington Police Department.
Opinion
This man did what any father would do when their child is in danger. He just reacted without thinking twice. The family is surely going through a lot of emotions right now, but at least they truly know the true colors of their dad and that he really is a hero who took the ultimate sacrifice and would probably make the same decision if given the chance.
