KrebsonSecurity.com broke the story after they received an anonymous tip from an anti-fraud analyst who's said to be at a top ten U.S. bank card issuer.
Though it's nearly impossible to avoid this kind of crime Detective Sean Smith, with Sacramento Sheriff's high-tech crime force, advised that if you are compromised you might at first simply see a small nominal charge of a dollar or two.
"What that is typical of is the bad guy going and vetting out the card numbers that are active and still working," said Detective Smith.
If you do see any unusual charges, Smith says to deactivate that account and talk to your credit card company.
The Secret Service has also confirmed they'll be investigating this.
